Abstract

The purpose of this good practice statement is to support the safe and effective use of depot antipsychotic injections.

Antipsychotic depot injections have been used in psychiatry for many years. There are disadvantages to depot use namely managing side effects that may be prolonged and patient perception. The use of depots can be the subject of controversy, however in appropriate circumstances they are a very useful addition to the range of antipsychotic preparations available.

This policy applies to all staff working within NHS GG&C Mental Health Services. This includes Adult, Older Adult, Learning Disability, Addiction, Forensic and Child & Adolescent Mental Health Services.
