Abstract

Zuclopenthixol acetate is an antipsychotic given by intramuscular injection licensed for the short term management of acute psychosis or mania. This guidance is intended to assist in the decision making process and provide information on when and how to use this treatment appropriately and safely.

Zuclopenthixol acetate is NOT quick acting and should NOT be prescribed if immediate sedation is required. It is a potentially toxic and hazardous drug which has the potential to be used inappropriately. There is little published data to support its use in psychiatric emergencies.

This policy is intended for use by all registered nursing staff and prescribers working within NHS GG&C Mental Health Inpatient settings Including Adult, Older Adult, Learning Disability, Addiction and Forensic Mental Health Inpatient Settings.
